Default Top 10 ranked USA hospitals - FYI

Here are a few of the details: Reputation, which counted as 32.5 percent of the score, was based on three years of specialist surveys—a total of almost 10,000 physicians were asked to name five hospitals they consider among the best in their specialty for difficult cases, without taking into account cost or location. A mortality index, also 32.5 percent of the score, indicates a hospital's ability to keep patients with serious problems alive. Patient safety, new this year, made up 5 percent of the score; it indicates how well a hospital minimizes harm to patients. And a group of other care-related factors, such as nurse staffing and available technology, accounted for the remaining 30 percent.

Of the 174 hospitals that are ranked in one or more specialties, 21 qualified for the Honor Roll by earning high scores in at least six specialties. This demonstrates unusual breadth of excellence. Johns Hopkins Hospital tops the list, as it has every year from 1991 on. (The Mayo Clinic was No. 1 in 1990, Best Hospitals' first year.)

Hospitals are listed by total points. A hospital got 2 points if ranked at or close to the top in a specialty and 1 point if ranked slightly lower.

Default Rankings are always interesting!

Thanks Jill, for posting this. I think the mortality index is interesting. I would love to see a similar benchmarking system for U.S. hospitals employing a "diagnostic index," that is, they would use a methodology that identifies the hospital ability to identify the problem, resolve the root cause and treat problem. It's OK to dream, right?!

I'll have to study the list, but it looks like few (if any) of these organizations have clinics that are offer joint diagnostics / repair centers. Maybe one of these caught your eye in terms of their TOS treatment capability? Dunno, just wondering. I think TOS is really specialized.

As far as ADR Surgeries & other spine offerings - I noticed from the above list these #'s had those services to offer - 3,5,7,12, 13 , 17 & 17 the 2nd 17 being Yale. I think if one does a search they would find who the doc's are as many of them are known to the board. I think it is neat to see the better ranked hosptials with wide services as also have good spine specialists using their facilities.

In regard to TOS surgeries I didn't check some of them that are further away so they may have specialists these hospitals tended to have wider variety of specialists to begin with but I know #'s 2,9 & 20 have TOS specialists. I saw one of them at #9
