Hey information technology extraordinaires, I need your help! In the past few months, I’ve been besieged by spam emails – from Germany. What kind of nut would go out of their way to submit my organization email address to German spambots?
Any way, as an admin for this board for almost four years, I consider myself reasonably tech savvy. But I ain’t that smart. I need help in these areas: - Minimizing the amount of time it takes me to manage spam. This obviously cuts down on my time to help patients. - Finding the right (additional) software to reduce spam. - Recommending ways to keep this community safe from spammers, hackers, and no-gooders! This problem also limits my ability to send & receive emails. Some emails were lost because of this problem, so call me if in doubt about your email to the number below. Thanks for any ideas in preventing this problem. This is important – it takes up way too much of my time. SOS! Email or call with details!!!

Well, for beginning I'd suggest to remove email address from "Contact Us" and replace with some kind of contact form that doesn't contain email. Right now it's very easy for any bots to extract and use your contact email.

Couple of potential suggestions:
1. Forward your email to a gmail account (which is what I do). Gmail is pretty efficient at identifying and filtering spam. 2. If you are more of a POP3 email account user, then install a filtering system such as spam assassin (http://wiki.apache.org/spamassassin/InstallingOnWindows). David

Thanks guys! I use spamassassin now; I don't think that it is killing emailers...just sort of slapping them. The "contact us" link is a convenience for patients; many of whom don't like forms! Oh well, such is life in the Internet age.
David, I prefer Outlook as a mail client -- but if GMail is generally regarded as being better (across the board) than Gmail it is...it may be time to change. Thx again.

Why don't you forward your POP3 account to gmail for a couple of months and see if it works better for you?
If it doesn't (or you don't like it), then all you need to do is disable the forwarding.... David
