After spending most of today in pre-op getting blood work & EKG etc. The Surgery to replace my L5/S1 disc with the Charite replacment disc will be done tomorrow. I'm the second one being done tomorrow so they will get to warm up before starting on me. I'm getting it done with 100% insurance coverage through Thomas Cooper Ins. a divission of BCBS of South Carolina. I think that the only reason the insurance finaly approved the proceedure after eight months of appeals was due to the fact that my wife's co self insures through Thomas Cooper. So in otherwords her c CEO has the final say so. When her boss found out that we had been batteling with the Ins. Co for so long she immeadiately send over a letter of approval to the Insurance Co. I wish it could be so easy for everyone. From what I'm seeing & hearing though, more & more insurers are comming around to seeing the long term advantages to disc replacment & are beginning to pay for the proceedure. I'd say that within another six months more will be covering it than not. Everyone keep your fingers crossed & say a prayer & I'll let you know how I make out just as soon as I can.

What would be cinsidered an ordinary recovery time for the surgery I'm having tomorrow. I'm told it will take longer & be more painfull due to my body mass index. I'm 50 pounds over weight but can't afford to wait any longer. About how lonh can I expect to be in recovery?

I am so glad you're having your surgery! I'll be thinking about you and sending good wishes your way. Regarding recovery, as you have probably discovered on this forum, we're all different. Any discomfort I felt during recovery was tolerable because I knew it would lessen, in contrast to the pain before surgery which I knew would only get worse. Good luck!

Proud Dad,
Best wishes for your surgery tomorrow! Persistence pays off!

Hopefully someone can give you an estimate about the recovery. If you read the thread about other people's experiences you should get an idea of what to expect.

Wishing you a great outcome and speedy recovery!
