Ever since I've been taking medications for my back injury, occasionally I would wake up with a sore throat and a swollen uvula.

What is a uvula you ask?

u-vu-la: A small, conical, fleshy mass of tissue suspended from the center of the soft palate.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Does anyone know if any medications exacerbate this condition?

It seems my mouth is dry some mornings and this swollen uvula has only happened to me a handful of times in the past 2 1/2 years. This NEVER happened to me before my injury/medications so I wonder if any of you Spineys get this also.
I have a swollen uvula today but it went down after drinking liquids.

My current medications include:
Lyrica (nerve blocker)
Diazepam (muscle relaxer)
Oxycontin (pain reliever)
Testosterone (for low testosterone)
Chorionic Gonadotropin (for low testosterone)

Eddie, do you think that the meds may have changed your sleep patterns, such that snoring is now causing the problem?

If it were uvulitis, you would think that the condition would persist; but as you say drinking relieves the problem. But I'm no ENT doc, that's for sure! Talk to your doc if it persists!

You should report this to your PCP and see if there is anything clinically going on besides the intake of meds and snoring. Just to make sure...

Hope this helps (from Net):

"The uvula is made of the same lymphatic tissue as the tonsils and can become swollen for a number of reasons. The most common is a very dry mouth, sometimes caused by dehydration from drinking alcohol. Other causes include throat infections, which can sometimes spread from the tonsils to the uvula, or allergic reactions.
The first thing to do is deal with possible dehydration by drinking plenty of water. If you have a sore throat as well, a good home remedy is to mix a quarter of a teaspoon of turmeric powder with a teaspoon of honey and lick it slowly from a spoon.

Gargling with a cup of warm salt water with a pinch of turmeric added will help reduce any swelling and discomfort in the throat too, gargle before going to bed for the best results.

The swelling usually subsides within a few hours"

Thanks, I tried that and I do feel better. I just thought this was a common thing among our community with all the similiar meds we all take. I guess I assumed that more folks here had this problem since this only started since I began medications for my back injury. I had quite a lovely uvula until a few years ago...
