My take on this...you can't go wrong with:
- a weight bearing, daily exercise like walking; - a daily multivitamin; - eating foods rich in natural vitamins, including D. - Sunshine will help with D creation & absorption...and lift your spirits! ![]()

Interesting article, ANS. The study didn't say if anyone was having difficulty absorbing Calcium or what type of Calcium Supplements were being consumed. You could ingest lots of Calcium but if your body isn't absorbing it then it doesn't help your bones any.

I only glanced at that article, citrate is supposedly the easiest form for absorption. I believe it is in the early stages of life regarding amounts of Ca (absorbed obviously)and type of exercise that determine whether one gets or avoids osteoporosis in later life.

I've tried all forms of supplemental calcium and been unable to stomach it.. literally getting so much abdominal pain from this so I stick to being as weight bearing as possible, eating a calcium rich diet, walking at least 2x daily (with dog of course) and taking Actonel every week.
I've an order for a BMD test and hopefully the results will not be worse than the last time, I do hope they are better~ have osteoporosis in my left femoral head..osteopenia in lumbar spine~ |

I will chime in on this topic because I've mentioned the importance of food and plant based supplements. Humans do not generally eat ground coral or ground shells, so why do we think that if we take them in tablet form that they will be a cure all? It is much better and effective to eat a diet rich in calcium and other nutrients. our body will synthesize these nutrients more readily. Ten years ago, I was diagnosed with osteopenia and borderline osteoporosis. Prior to my ADR surgery I had another BMD and much of my osteopenia was reversed. A healthy diet and proper exercise can make a tremendous difference.

That's probably true as long ss your able to digest dairy products. If your not or can't consume enough foods with calcium each day then the supplements are needed. Especially if your system is already deficient in Calcium. If your successful in reversing osteoporosis or preventing it without calcium supplements or medication that's terrific.
